Where do you begin when designing an online course? Are there procedures that will help you organize and plan your online instruction? How do you create engaging online activities? What technologies can you integrate in your course that will engage your learners with the course content, you, and their peers? OL 3400 is designed to assist you in answering these questions as you design and develop your own online course. By the end of the four-week course, you will have created an assessment assignment/activity, a course syllabus, and an action plan on incorporating principles of universal design.
In order to reach this goal, we will be discussing and experiencing a wide variety of topics, such as assessment, designing and developing course content, locating pre-existing content, and exploring emerging technologies and universal design, etc., which are all important components in the instructional design process. You are expected to actively attend the sessions and also produce drafts of the documents described above, as well as participate in any online activities.
The emphasis of OL 3400 is on the design and development of a course and not necessarily the authoring of original written content or multimedia assets. Furthermore, depending on whether or not you work with an instructional designer, some of the design and development tasks are accomplished in collaboration with your academic unit or a Penn State World Campus instructional designer.
