OL 3825.01: Excellence in Academic Advising: Under-Resourced Students I

This course takes a deep dive into the different student populations, called “under-resourced” students, and how to provide quality academic advising based on the essential components and unique characteristics of each student population. Topics include advising diverse populations of multicultural students, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and first-generation students.

Striving to understand the whole individual is a good advising strategy with any student, but it is particularly important for students representing different populations. Taking a holistic view of advising is important when working with these student populations (Varney and Peck, 2012). Taking a holistic view requires understanding of many student cohorts and the unique characteristics for each population.

General Course Outline
This course will provide information, resources, learning activities, and feedback regarding the following topics for advising several different under-resourced student populations in higher education. These topics are included in the five course modules:

• Introduction: Learning about Cultural and Social Capital
• First-Generation
• LGBTQ
• Multicultural Students
• Students with Disabilities
