OL 3875.01: Excellence in Academic Advising: Career Advising

Although career advising is not the primary role of an academic adviser, holistic academic advising involves more than just course selection. Students ask academic advisers career-related questions like which major to choose. While you are not assigned to career advising, you will likely encounter common career-related questions from students.

The purpose of this training is to:

• inform the career conversations you have with students
• support you in identifying suitable referrals to career professionals at your campus
• provide a professional development opportunity for you

Course Objectives
By the end of this training, you should:

• be able to assist students when they ask you for advice on career topics
• understand common choices made during college
• understand how college majors are related to career pathways
• identify and use valid and reliable career resources
• recognize hand-off points between academic advisers and career professionals
