In your line of work, you will likely encounter students with a connection to the U.S. Armed Forces: currently serving members, former members, retirees, or dependents. This course will introduce you to the population of military-connected students at Penn State and how faculty and staff can best support them.
Course Objectives
After taking this course, you should be able to:
- identify general demographics pertaining to military and veteran students at Penn State
- name the branches of service and identify a distinguishing characteristic of each
- describe key differences between active-duty and guard/reserve components
- identify challenges commonly faced by military members and their families
- recognize the faculty/staff role in military student success
- list common expectations military and veteran students may have of faculty and staff
- direct students to available resources
- examine your course syllabus for opportunities to clarify expectations, requirements, policies, etc.
- reflect on your personal approach to accommodating students when course interruptions arise
- review existing Penn State policies regarding military students
- identify the most appropriate response to meet student needs, given a scenario
