The intention of this course is to equip course authors and instructors with knowledge about accessible web practices and course design that can be applied when creating and adding content in Canvas. Beyond teaching you about standard accessibility best practices in relation to authoring in Canvas, this course also aims to provide a broader perspective of who our World Campus students are and why implementing these practices really matter for them.
Course Objectives
After taking this course, you should be able to do the following:
- recall information about Penn State’s history with accessibility, our accommodation processes, World Campus students with disabilities, and the assistive technology they use
- be familiar with our World Campus student personas
- identify and apply good practice related to structural page elements like headings, lists, and links
- build and use tables to present data clearly
- evaluate images and write clear, accurate descriptions for them
- identify and apply color and formatting options that will make text readable for everyone
- create math content using the math editor
- choose high-quality videos that have accurate captions and a transcript
- evaluate textbooks and readings for accessibility
- assess whether or not course tools and technology will be accessible for all students
